Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-6) outdueled the Shreveport Sports (6-8) by a score of 1-0 on Thursday night in the first meeting between the two teams.

Tony Cogan started the game for the Canaries. He pitched four shutout innings allowing four hits and striking out two. Cogan left the game with a mild groin injury. Robert Barrett took over and kept the shutout going. Barrett struck out two and allowed only two hits in his four innings.

The one and only run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth. John Schmitz doubled and Chris Hall followed with a double of his own to score Schmitz, giving the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

Matt Montgomery, who saved 18 games for the Canaries in 2005, returned to his closer role for the Birds in the ninth inning. He allowed two hits, which put runners on the corners, before ending the game with back-to-back strikeouts.

Robert Barrett (2-1) picked up the win, Josh Neitz (2-3) suffered the loss for Shreveport and Matt Montgomery picked up his first save with the Canaries this season.

The Canaries will host Shreveport Sports again tomorrow for game two of their three-game series. Friday night, Coca-Cola will present the Jefferson Bobble, the third in the Mount Rushmore Bobble Series. The Jefferson Bobbles will be given away to 1,000 random fans.
