Blacksnakes suffer loss in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, MN-St. Joe (6-8, 32-30) resumed the second half following the All-Star Break by losing 12-5 to St. Paul (7-6, 36-25). St. Paul's Brian Buchanan had a career-night, going 5-for-5, with a home run and three doubles with a franchise and league record nine runs batted in.

St. Joe struck for the lead with a single run in each of the first two innings on run-scoring hits by Wil Quintana and Jimmy Mojica for a 2-0 lead. But Buchanan hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to tie the game before St. Paul plated four two-out runs in the third to make it 6-2. Buchanan had a two-run double to cap the inning.

In the fifth, the 'Snakes got to within 6-5 by scoring three times on a two-run Ben Thomas double and Quintana's second run-scoring double of the year.

But St. Paul knocked out Mark Nussbeck by scoring another pair in the fifth, including an RBI double by Buchanan to go up 8-5. St. Paul opened the game up in the sixth on a three-run double by Buchanan for an 11-5 game and he put the finishing touches on the win with an RBI single in the eighth for the final 12-5 margin.

Nussbeck (5-3) had his first rough outing of the season, allowing eight runs in just 4 1/3 innings. St. Joe's offense only picked up hits in three of their nine at-bats, and did not get a hit after the fifth inning.

The 'Snakes continue the series in St. Paul with Donovan Graves (6-3) starting Friday night against St. Paul's Charlie Ruud (4-4). Game time is 7:05pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45pm at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
