Canaries' season ends with 3-1 win

St. Paul, MN - On Saturday night, the Sioux Falls Canaries (18-30) wrapped up the 2006 season with a 3-1 win against the St. Paul Saints (25-22).

The Birds were able to prevail despite injuries and a trade forcing three pitchers into the line-up. Canaries outfielder John Schmitz was traded to the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League following Friday night's game for a player to be named later. Outfielder Chad Hermansen and First Baseman Bubba Smith missed Saturday's game due to injuries. The line-up scratches led to three pitchers in the line-up. The Canaries struck first in the top of the fourth inning. Chris Hall and Tony Cogan singled to put runners on first and second base. Matt Montgomery laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third base. Angelo Fermin followed with a double to score Hall. Cogan tried to score on the play as well, but was thrown out on a relay from left fielder Jose Torres. One run scored to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

The Saints tied the game in the fifth inning. With runners on the corners and two away, Steve Butler hit a ground ball to the right side. First baseman Tony Cogan misplayed the ball and Nick Gretz scored on the error to even the score, 1-1.

The Canaries went back in front in the sixth inning. With two outs, Tony Cogan doubled and Matt Montgomery singled to put two men on base for Angelo Fermin. Fermin doubled to score both Cogan and Montgomery and give the Canaries a 3-1 lead.

Matt Petrusek (2-3) pitched five innings giving up one unearned run on two hits to get the win for the Canaries. Mike Peck (0-1) took the loss for the Saints. Jason Cierlik closed the door on the 2006 season with his second save of the year.
