August 26, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Pelican Park was packed Saturday night as the Pensacola Pelicans and Shreveport Sports faced off in the last game of the 2006 season. For the first time in Pensacola history, the Pelicans roped off the leftfield warning track and invited fans to sit in the outfield to watch the game. 4,209 fans came out to support the team, shattering the previous record set earlier in the season. The large crowd tonight also broke the average game attendance set in 2005. In the game, the Sports held on to win 5-2 as they prepare for their post-season.

Shreveport took advantage of six walks through the first six innings and scored four runs before the Pelicans could get on the board. Coby Smith singled and then stole second base, third base and home to score the first run of the game.

Neb Brown was hit by a pitch with two out in the third and advanced to third base when the two hitters behind him were walked. Brown came in to score on an Al Corbeil single. In the fourth inning a two out double by Neb Brown brought Austin Easley and Melvin Falu around to score, stretching the Shreveport lead to 4-0.

Pensacola started to chip away at the lead in the sixth inning and threatened to do major damage with bases loaded and only one out. Juan Rocha reached base on a walk and advanced to third on a double by Jose Yepez and Drake Wade was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Catcher John Pasieka then grounded out but brought got an RBI as Juan Rocha came in to score and the Pelicans cut the Shreveport lead to three runs.

Because of the departure of Ed Montague and George Branch to the Canadian-American League the Pelicans found themselves short a hitter. Instead of using starting pitcher Michael Hyle as a batter, Kash Beauchamp decided to bat pitcher Trey Stephens as the designated hitter. Stephens delivered by getting singles in each of his first three at-bats and he came around to scored in the seventh inning when he was driven in by Rolo Avila.

The Sports added another run in the eighth as Austin Easley drove in Al Corbeil, giving Shreveport a 5-2 lead.

Trino Aguilar reached base in the bottom of the ninth but would not get any further as the Sports held on for a 5-2 win.
