
Canaries Rout Saltdogs Again, 12-5

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (7-6) routed the Lincoln Saltdogs (5-8) for the second night in a row, earning a series split at Haymarket Park with a 12-5 win on Sunday evening.
The Saltdogs opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Corey Harrington led off with a single and stole second base to get into scoring position. Bryan Warner singled to plate Harrington and put Lincoln on the scoreboard, 1-0. The Saltdogs then loaded bases on walks to Brett Cooley and Josh Patton. Seth Pietsch grounded into a fielder's choice to score Warner and give Lincoln a 2-0 lead.
The Canaries bounced right back with two runs in the top of the second inning. The Birds loaded the bases on a double by Ben Van Iderstine and a pair of two-out walks by Matt Imwalle and Tim Marks. Orlando Miller singled to centerfield scoring both Van Iderstine and Imwalle. Miller's RBI hit tied the game, 2-2.
Lincoln took the lead back in the bottom of the second inning. The Saltdogs loaded the bases on singles by Aaron Mendoza, Carlos Gallardo, and Harrington. Bryan Warner grounded out to the first baseman to bring home Mendoza. Warner's second RBI of the game put Lincoln back in front, 3-2.
The Birds unloaded seven runs on seven hits in the third inning. Juan Figueroa and Will Smith started the inning with back-to-back singles. Abner Arroyo followed with a double to score Figueroa and tie the game, 3-3. Arroyo's double extended his hitting streak to 21 games. Arroyo is now one game shy from tying the league record for consecutive games hitting safely. After Arroyo tied the game, Wil Quintana hit a ground ball to Saltdogs shortstop Tony Garcia. Quintana's ground ball brought home Will Smith for a 4-3 lead, and Garcia misplayed the ball. The error by Garcia allowed Quintana to reach and Arroyo to score. The additional run put Sioux Falls ahead, 5-3. After Quintana stole his fifth base of the season to get in scoring position, Marks singled to score Quintana and put the Canaries ahead by three, 6-3. Miller followed with his second homer of the season to extend the lead further, 8-3 Canaries. The Birds wrapped up the seven-run inning with back-to-back doubles by Cameron Coughlan and Figueroa; Figueroa's double scored Coughlan. After the Canaries scored seven in an inning for the second night in a row, they took a 9-3 lead going into the bottom of the third inning.
The Saltdogs got one back in the bottom of the third inning. Seth Pietsch tripled and Aaron Mendoza brought him in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. After three innings the Canaries led, 9-4.
Lincoln got one more run on the night. The Saltdogs scored in the seventh inning when Josh Patton walked, went to third on a double by Seth Pietsch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Yaconetti. After seven innings, the Canaries led, 9-5.
The Birds added three more runs in the ninth. Van Iderstine, Arroyo, and Quintana singled to fill the bases. Van Iderstine scored on a groundout by Imwalle, Arroyo scored on a single by Marks, and Quintana scored on a groundout by Miller. The final three runs of the game gave the Canaries a 12-5 win over Lincoln in the series finale at Haymarket Park.
Micah Posey (3-6) picked up the win by pitching eight innings, and giving up four runs on eight hits. Johnny Thompson (1-1) took the loss for Lincoln.
The stars of the American Association now head to Sioux Falls for the 2007 American Association All-Star Game presented by Sanford Health, Lithia Dodge of Sioux Falls, Chevrolet of Sioux Falls, Argus Leader Media, and First PREMIER Bank & PREMIER Bankcard. The All-Star Game takes place on Tuesday night at 7:35 p.m. The pre-game skills competition begins at 5:15 p.m., and the gates will open at 4:30 p.m.
