Sioux Falls, SD - It was déjà vu with a happier ending at the Birdcage on Thursday night when the Sioux Falls Canaries rallied from down nine runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Sioux City Explorers, 12-11.
The Explorers (10-10) took a four run lead in the second and extended it to an 11-2 lead with five runs in the top of the seventh. However, the Canaries came back with an astounding eight runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game.
The rally began when Dennis Anderson collected a two-run homer with two outs making it 11-4. A single by Angelo Fermin scored Chris Hall and David Hoffman cutting the lead to 11-6. Chad Hermansen singled to score Kyle Kmeicik and Fermin and make it 11-8. The Canaries capitalized on the X's second error of the inning to score Ralph Santana and make it 11-9. Finally, Hermansen scored on a walk for Anderson to cap off an eight run inning that made it an 11-10 game.
The Canaries took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. David Hoffman led off with a double and scored on a two-run homer by Kmiecik that bounced off the top of the left-field wall to put Sioux Falls ahead, 12-11, Canaries.
Jason Cierlik (2-0) picked up the win in relief. John Howerton (3-1) suffered the loss, and John Wesley pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season.
The Canaries will host the Lincoln for the first game of the series at the Birdcage tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. It will be the first in the Canaries Mount Rushmore Bobble Series, as the Canaries will give away 1,000 Abe Lincoln bobbles to random fans on Friday night. The Abe Lincoln Bobble Giveaway is presented by Schoeneman's Lumber.
