Birds erase seven-run deficit, lose in tenth

Sioux Falls, SD - The Canaries (5-13) rallied from down 7-0 to force extra innings on Wednesday night against the Sioux City Explorers (10-9), but lost 10-9 in ten innings.
The Explorers got out to a 7-0 lead in the first three innings on home runs from Dan Meier, Kevin Henry and Jorge Moreno.
The Canaries got on board in the bottom of the third. Ralph Santana walked, advanced to third base on an error by Explorers shortstop Robert Mendoza and raced home on a wild pitch making it 7-1.
The X's scored one in the top of the fourth, but the bottom half of the inning saw Chris Hall triple and score on a single by Kyle Kmeicik to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Moreno started off the fifth with his second home run of the night to make it 9-2, but the Canaries would begin their big comeback in the bottom half of the inning. Chad Hermansen got on base with a triple and scored on a double by Abner Arroyo. Then, Dennis Anderson doubled to score Arroyo. Finally, David Hoffman scored Anderson on a groundout to make it, 9-5.
The Canaries continued to pick up speed in the sixth. After Santana walked, Hermansen hit a two-run homer, his third of the year, narrowing the score to 9-7, Explorers.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hermansen and Arroyo walked setting the stage for a two-out double by Dennis Anderson to tie up the game, 9-9.
In the tenth inning, the X's took the lead on a two out infield single by Ryan Gripp scoring Moreno. Sean Kramer closed out the game in the bottom of the tenth for the 10-9 Explorers win.
John Howerton (3-0) took the win, Lenny Bays suffered the loss (1-1), and Kramer picked up his third save of the season.
The Canaries will host the Explorers for the third game of the series at the Birdcage tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. It will be "Bring Your Instrument to the Ballpark Night." All fans are encouraged to bring their instruments to the game.
