Canaries prevail 9-4 in Mahomes' first win

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux Falls Canaries took advantage of a grand slam by Ben Van Iderstine and a quality start by Pat Mahomes to pick up a 9-4 victory over the Sioux City Explorers for their eighth win of the season.

The Canaries (8-2) opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Wil Quintana hit his fourth homer of the season to give the Canaries an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Ben Van Iderstine hit a two-out single and Matt Imwalle followed with a double to score Van Iderstine and give the Canaries a 2-0 lead.

The Explorers (3-7) scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Willie James laid down a bunt back to pitcher Pat Mahomes and beat it down the line for a single. Mahomes throw to first base was wide of Canaries first baseman Abner Arroyo, and James was able to advance around to third on the error. James scored on a groundout by Alex Llanos, and Sioux City trimmed the Canaries lead to 2-1.

The Birds exploded for five runs in the top fifth inning. Angelo Fermin led the inning off with a double. James Shanks followed with a bunt single to advance Fermin to third base. A sacrifice fly by Trevor Lawhorn brought home Fermin for a 3-1 lead. Quintana and Will Smith drew walks to load the bases for Van Iderstine. Van Iderstine came through with a grand slam, his first homer of the season, to give the Canaries a 7-1 lead.

The Canaries got a couple more in the eighth inning. Tim Marks doubled and scored on a triple by Angelo Fermin to put the Canaries ahead, 8-1. Fermin scored on a groundout by James Shanks, and the Canaries took a 9-1 lead.

Sioux City added a pair in the eighth inning. Willie James walked and advanced to third on a double by Jorge Moreno. James and Moreno both scored on a double by Jake Daubert to cut the Canaries lead to six, 9-3.

In the ninth inning, Mike Richardson hit his second homer of the season, a solo shot to pull the Explorers within five runs. Sioux City failed to score again as the Canaries closed out a 9-4 win.

Pat Mahomes (1-0) picked up the win for the Canaries allowing only one unearned run on four hits and two walks. Mahomes struck out four Explorers batters in his seven innings. Aaron Marsden (0-2) suffered the loss for Sioux City.

The Canaries and Explorers will conclude their four-game series on Friday night. Sunday's 5:05 p.m. game will feature a rematch of Opening Day, with Jeff Landing pitching for the Canaries against Brad Guy for the Explorers.

The Birds return home on Tuesday, May 22 to host the Fort Worth Cats in a three-game set, that begins with "AAA South Dakota Member Appreciation" featuring the #6 Dave Ragan Ford Fusion Showcar.
