WINNIPEG, MB- The Sioux Falls Canaries continued their week-long road trip on Friday afternoon, opening up a three-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Canada Day at Shaw Park. David Bergin went 3-for-4 at the plate, but the Canaries dropped the opening game of the series by the final score of 8-1. Canaries starting pitcher Joe Bircher had his worst start of the season, allowing a season-high eight runs (five earned runs) on nine hits while walking five batters, also a season high. Bircher (0-5, 3.14 ERA) faced the minimum in the bottom of the 1st inning, but gave up his first run of the day in the bottom of the 2nd after giving up a two-out RBI single to Casio Grider. The Goldeyes extended their lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning after the first seven batters of the inning reached base safely, including Jacob Rogers, who walked with the bases loaded before Ridge Hoopii-Haslam made it a 3-0 lead with a two-out RBI single. Bircher's tough day continued in the bottom of the 4th inning, giving up five runs while facing 10 batters. Goldeyes catcher Carlton Tanabe hit the first of three straight singles to start the inning before scoring on a David Rohm RBI sac-fly. Josh Romanski also picked up an RBI sac-fly to bring home Maikol Gonzalez before Hoopii-Haslam capped off the big inning with an RBI double to center field to make it 8-1. The Canaries only run of the afternoon came in the top of the 4th inning on a David Bergin RBI single. Blake Schmit led off the inning with a walk, advancing into scoring position on a Jake Taylor one-out single before Bergin picked up the RBI.
