Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WINNIPEG, MB, CANADA - The Gary SouthShore RailCats entered Thursday night's game 0-15 when trailing after eight innings. Jeremy Hamilton and Alex Crosby used hits in the top of the 9th inning to change the Cats' (22-17) fortunes and solidify a series victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (20-20).
Thursday's game was especially important to the boys from the SouthShore because they squandered several opportunities to win last night's game, including a 9th inning runner on third base. Tonight they entered the final inning down 4-3 and Frank Martinez led off with a walk. Then, Hamilton doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Martinez scored on a wild pitch from closer Jailen Peguero, the pitcher who recorded the save last night. With the game tied, Alex Crosby singled to score Hamilton and give the Cats the 5-4 lead.
Taylor Black set down two Goldeyes in the bottom half of the inning but was pulled when two runners reached. Manager Greg Tagert brought in Andy Roberts to get the final out and he did just that, inducing a groundout from Maikol Gonzalez. Black earned the win in the game and Roberts got the save.
The RailCats have now won five straight series. This win was especially impressive given the RailCats pitched three rookies in the game. Conrad Wozniak went 3.1 innings in his first professional appearance. Jake Eaton struggled in his second appearance, allowing two runs without recording an out. Christian Herstine was solid in 3.2 innings of one-hit ball.
Jose Gonzalez was 2-4 and the only RailCat with multiple hits. Brennan Metzger continued his hot streak by getting a hit and knocking in two runs.
Ethan Carnes started for Winnipeg and went 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. Peguero was charged with the loss for the Goldeyes.
The resilient RailCats maintained their grip on the American Association Central Division and will carry a three game lead into their next series. The team will get a boost tomorrow in Sioux City as they gain four pitchers who were unable to cross the border to Canada.
Tomorrow's first pitch against the X's is at 7:05 with coverage beginning at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
