Veteran Lefty Set to Join Bullpen

GARY, IN - LHP Moises Melendez signed his contract today and will join the Gary SouthShore RailCats. The 10-year veteran has been coveted by the RailCats since February and is officially on the team after experiencing visa issues. The RailCats released LHP Jake Eaton who signed with the team yesterday.

Melendez has served primarily as a reliever in his career with 198 games under his belt in relief and 71 starts in 10 seasons. He has pitched professionally in three continents and began his career in Venezuela with the Phillies in 2005.

The lefty has a career record of 32-32 with a 3.90 ERA in 683 innings pitched. He spent four years with the Phillies organization and went 17-6 while posting a 2.58 ERA. High A ball was the highest level he played at.

Melendez has spent the last six years playing in his native Venezuela and in American independent leagues. He most recently played for the RailCats' division rival, the Lincoln Saltdogs. In 2015 for Lincoln he went 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA.

Melendez is a native of Maracaibo, Venezuela.

Eaton pitched yesterday, the day he was signed, and gave up two runs without recording an out. The lefty is from LaPorte, IN and was in his second stint with the RailCats. His first outing with the Cats was similar. He made one appearance and pitched 2.1 innings of relief in a 7-1 loss to Kansas City. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks in the game.

The RailCats' 15th anniversary season continues with a three game series in Sioux City starting tonight. The Gary SouthShore RailCats have won five straight series and hold a 2.5 game lead in the American Association's Central Division.
