Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Joseph, MO - The Canaries (14-28) started a four-game road trip with a 10-3 loss to the St. Joe Blacksnakes (22-20) on Monday night.

An overturned call put the Canaries behind in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third and Jake Whitesides at the plate, a long fly ball down the right field line was initially ruled foul by home plate umpire Brad Auge. Blacksnakes manager Chris Carminucci disputed the call, leading to the umpires getting together to discuss the call. After the discussion, the ruling was overturned and the shot was called a home run. Whitesides fourth home run of the season gave St. Joe a 3-0 lead.

The Blacksnakes added to their lead in the third inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Terrell Merriman hit a high groundball up the middle. The grounder glanced of the top of a leaping Doug Johnson's glove. The ball traveled out of the reach of the Canaries pitcher and everyone was safe, loading the bases for Mark Burke. Burke drove a double to right field to clear the bases and put St. Joe ahead, 6-0.

The Canaries got on the board in the fourth. Abner Arroyo doubled and scored on a single by Dennis Anderson to make it a 6-1 game.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blacksnakes added four runs in spite of Robert Barrett striking out the side. Jimmy Mojica singled to score Denver Kitch, Ben Thomas doubled home Misha Dworken and Mojica, and Whitesides singled home Thomas for a 10-1 lead.

Jason Sugden scored for the Canaries on an error by Blacksnakes shortstop Jimmy Mojica in the seventh inning and hit his first home run of the season in the ninth inning for the 10-3 final.

Doug Johnson (2-5) allowed six runs on six hits in the loss. Donovan Graves (4-3) scattered 11 Canaries hits over seven innings in the win. Canaries rookie Robert Barrett struck out eight in three innings of relief.

The Canaries and Blacksnakes meet again on Tuesday night at 7:05 pm. The Canaries return home on Friday for a weekend series with the Sioux City Explorers. Friday night's game will feature a "Cap Giveaway" presented by Modern Woodman of America.
