June 26, 2006 - American Association (AA)
St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-St. Joe's offense has been rolling the past three weeks, and earlier today was rewarded with the team's second league award, and first hitting award.

Mark Burke was chosen as the Batter of the Week for the week of June 18-25 by Sportsticker, the American Association's official statistician. The Portland, OR native is in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak, and batted 15-for-29 (.517) during the week with 11 RBI.

In the middle of last week, Burke reached base safely in 10 consecutive at bats against St. Paul, with eight hits and two walks.

The 31-year old has raised his batting average over 100 points from .220 to .331 with the hitting streak, and is tied for second in the league with 33 runs batted in.

"I've been with Burke a number of years," said Manager Chris Carminucci, "and he's never received that honor and he's had some great weeks. But you can't put together a better week than he had."

Burke originally was drafted in the 26th round by the Atlanta Braves organization in 1997 and the veteran is in his eighth season playing independent baseball.

Fort Worth Cats' Cory Walters was named Pitcher of the Week.

Burke and the Blacksnakes begin a 10-game homestand tonight with the Sioux Falls Canaries at Phil Welch Stadium. Donovan Graves (3-2) starts the opener for the 'Snakes against the Canaries' Doug Johnson (2-4) at 7:05pm. It is Margarita Monday at the ballpark with the gates opening at 6pm. After Sioux Falls, St. Joe will wrap up the first half with Pensacola for three games before hosting Lincoln to start the second half over the Fourth of July.
