St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Joseph, MO-St. Joe (22-20) returned home to begin a season-long 10-game homestand and took the first of four with Sioux Falls (14-28) by a 10-3 final. St. Joe used a couple early big innings and Donovan Graves to coast to the victory.

St. Joe plated three in the first on Jake Whitesides' disputed home run. Whitesides drilled the ball down the right field line and it was first ruled foul, only to be overturned when the umpires got together and discussed the play. The three-run shot was Whitesides' fourth home run of the year and made it 3-0.

The ‘Snakes added three more in the third when they loaded the bases with two outs and Mark Burke delivered a bases clearing double to make it 6-0.

After Sioux Falls got on the board in the fourth, the Blacksnakes put the game away with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by run-scoring hits for Jimmy Mojica, Ben Thomas and Jake Whitesides. That 10-1 margin was too much for Sioux Falls.

Graves (4-2) earned the victory with seven strong innings, scattering nine hits and allowing a pair of runs, though just one earned.

Ben Thomas, Jake Whitesides and Jimmy Mojica each had two hits. Whitesides had four runs batted in and Mark Burke had three knocked in with his double that extended his hitting streak to 15 straight games.

Tuesday night is the second game in the four-game series, with Andrew Edwards (0-1) returning to the starting rotation for the ‘Snakes. Sioux Falls counters with Peter Bauer (1-3). Game time is 7:05pm at Phil Welch Stadium and the gates open at 6pm. It's "'80s Night" at the ballpark with ‘80s trivia and prizes throughout the night. The broadcast begins at 6:45pm at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com, and all home games can now be heard at Phil Welch Stadium, as well, on 88.9 FM for the remainder of the season.
