Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - They say you can't win them all, and that was true for the Canaries against the Texas AirHogs in 2019. The Birds (32-43) suffered their first loss against Texas (20-55) this year on Wednesday at AirHogs Stadium.

The game was tight throughout; Sioux Falls rallied to tie the game at 4 in the seventh. But an eighth-inning RBI single from Stephen Haviar gave Texas a 5-4 win.

Tyler Herron threw seven innings of four-run ball in his second start as a Canary. The result sets up a rubber game between the two teams Thursday night.

The Birds opened the scoring in the third inning. Brett Vertigan hit a one-out double, and Alay Lago came through with an RBI single to bring Vertigan home. It was Lago's 47th RBI of the year, tying him with Clint Coulter for the most on the Canaries.

Texas responded with three in the bottom half. Javion Randle knocked a two-run double and Chen Junpeng came through with an RBI single, putting the AirHogs up 3-1.

Sioux Falls added a run in the top of the fourth on a pair of Texas errors, but another RBI single from Chen in the sixth put the AirHogs back in front by two.

The Birds chipped away at the Texas lead. Mike Hart hit an RBI single to cut the lead to one in the sixth, and Graham Low scored the tying run in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Herron stranded a man on third in the seventh inning, finishing off a 105-pitch performance. He walked just one batter and struck out seven.

Sam Bragg pitched the eighth inning for Sioux Falls, taking the loss after allowing Haviar's single. The Birds went down in order in the ninth.
