Canaries claim third straight win

El Paso, TX - The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-12) won their third consecutive game, defeating the El Paso Diablos (13-18) by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium in El Paso. Ryan Ford picked up his third win in four starts, pitching 7.1 shutout innings, scattering nine hits.

The Canaries broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning. Ben Van Iderstine reached on an error by Diablos shortstop David Keesee, and advanced to second base when Patrick Reilly was hit by a pitch. Paul Smyth proceeded with a sacrifice bunt. The Diablos catcher Mat Kent threw the ball into right field on the play, allowing Smyth to reach second, Reilly to advance to third, and Van Iderstine to score for a 1-0 Canaries lead. Tim Hutting followed with a single to plate Reilly, and Kennard Bibbs added a single to score Smyth. The three fifth inning runs, put the Canaries ahead, 3-0.

The Diablos got one lone run in the game, scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bryon Smith doubled to get on base. Bryan Cooksey came in to pinch run and scored on a single by Santrel Smith. The single run was not enough to catch the Canaries in the 3-1 final.

Ryan Ford improved his record to 3-3 with the win. Jusef Frias (1-3) was saddled with the loss in his first start of the year for El Paso. Kris Regas pitched the ninth inning for the Canaries to pick-up his 11th save of the season.

The Canaries and Diablos will wrap-up their three-game series on Thursday night at 8:05 p.m. Ben Moore will start for the Canaries on Thursday.

The Canaries return from a nine-game road trip to host the Wichita Wingnuts at the Birdcage for a doubleheader beginning at 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17. On June 17, the Canaries will team up with Volunteers of America to celebrate Father's Day with their "My Dad Is a Professional Baseball Player" promotion. One lucky dad will win the opportunity to be an honorary member of the Canaries for the June 17 doubleheader.
