El Paso Diablos News Release

The El Paso Diablos threatened all night, but came up short 3-1 against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Wednesday night at Cohen Stadium.

Canaries starter Ryan Ford was impressive throughout the first five innings. He allowed just two base hits in that stretch.

The Sioux Falls Canaries broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. El Paso committed two errors in the inning, a fielding error by David Keesee and a throwing error by the catcher Matt Kent which scored one run. Sioux Falls capitalized on the miscues, scoring two more on RBI singles by Tim Hutting and Grant Richardson, which gave the Canaries a 3-0 lead.

El Paso rallied late in the game, but came up short. The Diablos stranded two runners a piece, in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Canaries reliever Josh Kite struck out two batters with two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth inning to escape a bind.

The Diablos threatened one final time the bottom of the ninth. Stantrel Smith ripped a run-scoring to single to right field which scored Bryan Cooksey to break up the shut-out bid. Canaries closer Kris Regas retired the final two Diablos to end the chance.

Ryan Ford (3-3) picks up the victory. He threw seven and a third shut-out innings allowing nine base hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Jusef Frias (1-2) takes the hard luck loss. He threw seven innings allowing one earned run off of five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Kris Regas allowed one run off two hits in the ninth inning, but picked up his league leading 11th save of the season.

The Diablos will close out their three game home series against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. El Paso will send Justin Knoff to the mound against Ben Moore. The game will be broadcast live on www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
