Canaries' Big Inning Sinks Goldeyes

JACKSON, TN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-13) lost 11-4 to the Sioux Falls Canaries at The Ballpark at Jackson on Saturday night.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and no one on base, Kyle Martin doubled down the left field line. Max Murphy followed with a two-run home run to left-centre.
The Canaries (12-11) trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the second when Charlie Valerio hit a two-out, solo homer to right.
Logan Hill led off the bottom of the second with a triple to left-centre and scored on a Wes Darvill sacrifice fly to centre.
Sioux Falls took the lead for good with a six-run top of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Jabari Henry ripped a three-run double to left-centre that put the Canaries in front 4-3. The Canaries went on to reload the bases with two outs and made it 5-3 when Mitch Glasser was hit by a pitch. Michael Hart came home on a wild pitch, and Nick Gotta forced home the sixth run of the inning on a bases loaded walk.
The Canaries added three more runs in the top of the fifth. Gotta singled home Valerio with the bases loaded, while Glasser was forced in when Angelo Altavilla was hit by a pitch with the bases full. Jordan Ebert then scored on a wild pitch with Henry at the plate.
Martin trimmed the lead to 10-4 with a two-out, RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Trey Michelczewski's two-out, RBI single to centre in the top of the seventh drove in the game's final run.
Ty Culbreth (5-0) started for the Canaries and picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over six innings. Culbreth walked one and struck out five.
Christian James (1-2) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in two and two-thirds. James walked two and struck out one.
Ken Frosch worked three and two-thirds innings of extended relief and set a new career-high with six strikeouts. Jake Polancic made his Goldeyes' debut, and struck out two over one and two-thirds.
Martin made his first career pitching appearance in the top of the ninth, and worked a scoreless inning on seven pitches. Martin also finished the game with three hits. With the home run in the first inning, Murphy has hit safely in eight games in a row.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Joey Gonzalez (1-2, 8.55) faces right-hander Tyler Garkow (1-2, 6.47). All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
The Goldeyes will continue to monitor the reopening of the Canada/US border and assess a potential return to Shaw Park in 2021.
