Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 20, 2007) - On Tuesday, the Sioux Falls Canaries acquired second baseman Cameron Coughlan (pronounced Cog-lin) in a trade with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League. In exchange for Coughlan, the Canaries will send Winnipeg a player to be named later.
Coughlan was an 18th round draft pick of the Texas Rangers in 2002. In five years with the Rangers organization, he hit .276 with 10 homers and 151 RBI. After being released by the Rangers, Coughlin signed with the Goldeyes on March 8. In 24 games with the Goldeyes this season, the California native was hitting .225 with a homer and 10 RBI.
In order to make room on the roster for Coughlan, the Canaries have released shortstop Angelo Fermin. Fermin led the American Association with a .958 fielding percentage in 2006, but struggled defensively to start the 2007 season. Prior to his release, Fermin made 17 errors in 36 games with the Canaries. During Tuesday night's game, the first game following the changes to the middle-infield David Keesee moved from second base to shortstop, and Coughlan played second base.
