Pelicans Partner With Council On Aging For Senior Chill Out

Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans are teaming up with the Council on Aging of West Florida, Lowe's, WEAR TV-3, and Cumulus Radio for a one-day donation drive to acquire new air-conditioners, fans, or funds to assist seniors with heat-related issues.

Drop-off points will be at all three Lowe's locations in the Pensacola area including Fairfield Drive, Airport Blvd., and Highway 98 in Gulf Breeze from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 22. People who donate will receive two free ticket vouchers to any Pelicans game this season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more people die from heat waves each year than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to being adversely affected by excessive heat. The elderly are more prone due to slower adjustment of the body to changes in temperature, increased risks associated with other medical conditions and prescription medicines that can impair the ability to regulate temperature or inhibit perspiration.

The community is encouraged to come out, meet radio personalities and Pensacola Pelican players and help seniors beat the heat. For more information, call 432-1475 or visit www.coawfla.org.
