New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ- Scott Campbell led off the game with a home run, but Trenton rallied for a second consecutive night, scoring a 4-3 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats before 7,696 Saturday night at Waterfront Park in Trenton.
Campbell, who battled through a nine-pitch at-bat, fouling off four in a row, hit his third home run to right field off Trenton starter George Kontos to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead.
The Thunder (27-15) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Cody Ehlers doubled and scored on a single by Kevin Russo (2-for-4).
New Hampshire (14-27) moved back in front in the top of the fourth inning. Travis Snider walked and David Smith singled to left field. When the ball was misplayed by Colin Curtis in left and rolled to the wall, Snider came around to score to make it 2-1.
Trenton took advantage of two Fisher Cats errors to move ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jose Tabata reached when his ground ball in front of home plate was thrown wide at first by catcher Kyle Phillips. Tabata went to second on a single by P.J. Pilittere. Kevin Russo then doubled to centerfield, scoring Tabata. Pilittere also scored when Aaron Mathews made an error in centerfield, ending Scott Richmond's night as New Hampshire's starter.
Richmond (3-5) allowed three runs, only one earned, in 5.1 IP. He gave up nine hits, did not walk a batter and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts.
The Thunder made it 4-2 in the last of the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk to Pilittere by reliever Jamie Vermilyea.
Zach Kroeneke (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win for Trenton. The Fisher Cats threatened in the eighth inning against relief pitcher Michael Gardner. After two were out, Gardner walked David Smith and Kyle Phillips. Jacob Butler singled to load the bases. Ryan Patterson singled, scoring Smith, but Phillips was thrown out at home plate on a close call to retire the side.
Gardner issued a lead-off single to Anthony Hatch (2-for-4) in the ninth inning but worked through that to pick up his fifth save.
The Fisher Cats will look to avoid the sweep when the series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm at Waterfront Park. Right-hander Brandon Magee (0-6, 6.44) takes the mound against Thunder right-hander Daniel McCutchen 4-3, 2.52).
