May 17, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Caleb Stewart had a hand in both runs in Game 1 and Salvador Paniagua drove in four in Game 2 as the Binghamton Mets swept a doubleheader from the Erie SeaWolves, 2-0 and 7-5 at NYSEG Stadium Saturday. The B-Mets have won six straight while Erie has dropped 12 in a row.
In Game 1, Binghamton (20-21) went ahead in the second when Nick Evans singled off Andrew Kown (2-4) and scored on Stewart's triple to center. Stewart reached on an error in the fifth as Salomon Manriquez and Emmanuel Garcia followed with a walk and single, respectively, loading the bases. Coronado then drove in Stewart with a groundout.
That was more than enough run support for Jose Sanchez (4-2). The righthander retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced over six shutout innings, allowing one hit. Eddie Kunz tossed a scoreless seventh for his ninth save in as many chances.
In the nightcap, the B-Mets got to Erie starter Jon Connolly (0-3) in the second. Ambiorix Concepcion reached on a one-out single before Paniagua hammered a two-run homer to left-center. Emmanuel Garcia and Rafael Arroyo followed with singles before Garcia scored on Coronado's infield hit for a 3-0 B-Mets lead.
Erie (15-26) tied the score against Eric Brown (1-3) in the top of the third on Danny Worth's two-run homer and Justin Justice's RBI single. However, the B-Mets reclaimed the lead for good in the bottom of the third. After Evans reached on an error and Concepcion singled, Paniagua's double drove in both. Garcia then singled in Paniagua for a 6-3 B-Mets lead. Coronado's solo shot leading off the fourth made it 7-3.
Deik Scram's sacrifice fly in the fifth and Ryan Roberson's homer in the sixth helped Erie narrow the gap to two.
Erie got the tying runs on base in the seventh against Eddie Camacho, who gave way to Tim Lavigne. Lavigne earned his first save of the year without throwing a pitch, as he and second baseman Jonathan Malo combined to pick off Wilkin Ramirez at second to end the game.
Sunday, the Binghamton Mets wrap up their six-game homestand with the finale of a three-game series against the Erie SeaWolves. Bobby Parnell (3-2, 5.27) will start for Binghamton against lefty Danny Christensen (0-4, 4.50) of Erie. Game time is 1:05 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 12:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
