New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Steve Tolleson went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, including a twor-run single in the Rock Cats' four-run sixth inning, as the Rock Cats downed Portland 8-4 in the afternoon portion of Saturday's doubleheader.

In the sixth inning, the Rock Cats received back-to-back singles by Trevor Plouffe and Dustin Martin. Portland third baseman Andrew Pickney then misplayed a ball off the bat of Jeff Christy that allowed Plouffe to score the go-ahead run. Martin advanced to third and Christy reached second on the miscue. Tolleson then sent a single to center field that scored Martin and Christy. Erik Lis added an RBI double, but was thrown out at third. Luke Hughes had one last chance to extend his 17-game hitting streak, but struck out to end the inning.

Rock Cats starter Ryan Mullins had a rocky first inning, but settled down to toss six solid innings. Mullins (4-2, 3.04) allowed four runs on four hits while striking out five. Zach Ward fired a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game and lower his ERA to 0.35 on the season.

The Sea Dogs jumped on Mullins out of the gate after Jeff Corsaletti reached first base on a fielding error by first baseman Brock Peterson. Iggy Suarez followed with a single before Zachary Daeges' double scored Corsaletti. John Otness delivered a two-out double that knocked in two runs to extend Portland's lead to 3-0.

The Rock Cats answered back in the second inning. David Winfree led off the inning with a solo shot to right field. Martin then knocked in Plouffe, who reached base on a triple, to close the gap, 3-2. In the fourth, Plouffe walked and Martin reached base after being hit by a pitch. Plouffe and Martin pulled off a double steal which set the stage for Jeff Christy's RBI sac fly that tied the game. Tolleson added an RBI single that gave the 'Cats the lead.

Daeges hit a solo homer off Mullins in the sixth that tied the game.

Dustin Richardson, one of the top pitching prospects for the Red Sox, allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out four in five innings. Carlos Vasquez (0-1, 27.00) suffered the loss in his first game with the Sea Dogs after allowing the four runs in the sixth.
