Cal Wild Wins CHL Man of the Year

March 25, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

The Brampton Beast are honoured to announce that Cal Wild is the 2014 Central Hockey League "Man of the Year". The Central Hockey League Man of the Year award is 'presented annually to the CHL player adjudged to have best exemplified strong leadership qualities on and off the ice, while making significant and noteworthy humanitarian contributions to their community'. Come celebrate this honour with the Beast as they play a three-game series versus the Rapid City Rush. Since March 27, 28, and 30 will be Brampton's final regular season series, they will be thanking the fans in true Beast fashion with giveaways and prizes all weekend long.

The Winnipeg native made a quick impact to the organization last summer. He attended nearly 200 community events before the team saw their first puck drop. Wild attended youth sport camp clinics, hospital visits, charity fundraisers, leadership conferences and promotional festivities across the Region of Peel and Greater Toronto Area. To date, Wild has put in over 700 community service hours through the team and is continually adding more. "Cal Wild exemplifies all that is good in professional hockey players", said Cary Kaplan, Brampton General Manager and President. "He has touched the lives of thousands of fans through hundreds of community appearances in our first year. The Brampton Beast would not be where we are as an organization without Cal's leadership on and off the ice. We are proud that Cal is the much deserving CHL Man of the Year." "We are very pleased to present the Man of the Year Award to Mr. Wild," said Steve Ryan, Central Hockey League Commissioner. "His dedication and commitment to his club's off-the-ice activity in the community could not go unnoticed. The Beast franchise jumped right in last summer led in large part by the community efforts of Mr. Wild and the Central Hockey League would like to congratulate him on receiving such a high honor."

In addition, Wild has successfully launched "Cal's Pals" which he partners up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel to promote and encourage youth mentorship and civic engagement. "Cal's Pals" provides the opportunity for mentoring programs to invite their mentees to a Beast game and organized hockey clinics. This program supports and encourages healthy and active living initiatives throughout the community.

Prior to this recognition, Wild was acknowledged on the CHL's Best of the Best poll for being the best defensive forward in the CHL along with placing second for best penalty killer in the league. Remember that you can check out Cal and the Beast when they face off this weekend against the Rush! Fan Appreciation Weekend kicks off on Thursday March 27 with Thirsty Thursday. Enjoy $3 beers all night long! Friday Scouts Night Sleepover and Sunday, March 30 is the grand finale of the "Jerseys off Our Backs" contest. Every player will be presenting their game-worn jerseys to a lucky fan after the game. Be sure to enter the draw for just a toonie! Balloting concludes on March 28th.
