TRENTON, NJ - Right-handed pitcher Cory Burns tied the Akron Aeros single-season saves record recording his 29th save of 2011 in the teams 3-2 win over the Trenton Thunder Tuesday at Waterfront Park.
Burns joined Randy Newsom, who had 29 saves for the Aeros in 2008.
Right-handed pitcher Austin Adams was part of the bridge to Burns' record-setting save as he earned the win tossing five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out seven while walking three.
Right-hander Dellin Betances suffered the loss for the Thunder lasting four innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, walking four and striking out five.
The Aeros (56-54) got on the board in the top of the second inning. Raul Padron opened the frame with a walk and advanced to third on a Michel Hernandez double. Kyle Bellows followed with a two-RBI single scoring Padron and Hernandez and giving the Aeros a 2-0 lead.
The Thunder (57-52) cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning on an Austin Romine RBI single.
Ben Copeland quickly got the run back with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning to give the Aeros a 3-1 lead.
Trenton rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that was as close as they would get as Akron went on to the win.
The Aeros and Thunder will play game two of this three-game series Wednesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 4-10 with a 4.53 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Graham Stoneburner, who is 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA this season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m.
