Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
ALTOONA, PA - Jeurys Familia returned from the disabled list and was roughed up for four runs over 1 2/3 innings in Binghamton's 11-3 loss to Altoona at Blair County Ballpark Tuesday night. The B-Mets managed 14 hits in the landslide loss led by Allan Dykstra, who was 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI.
Binghamton (44-66) got on the board in the first inning against Curve starter Phil Irwin. Matt den Dekker led off the game with a triple off the wall in dead center field. Reese Havens followed and chased him home with a groundout to second.
Familia worked a 1-2-3 first inning before running into trouble in the second. The first two hitters of the inning reach on singles and a wild pitch moved them to third. After the right-hander struck out Matt Curry, he got Quincy Latimore to chase a two-strike breaking ball in the dirt for a strikeout. Kai Gronauer blocked the ball cleanly behind the plate and was about to pounce on the deflected ball, but Latimore kicked the loose ball up the first base line, allowing him to reach on a wild pitch and the runner to score from third. The kick was ruled unintentional by the umpiring crew, but the effect of the play lingered with Familia. He allowed an RBI single to Yunesky Sanchez and a two-out, two-run single to Starling Marte before walking back-to-back hitters forcing his departure. Erik Turgeon came on in relief and got out of the inning to maintain the 4-1 score. Manager Wally Backman was ejected in between innings for arguing the call.
Dykstra drew the B-Mets within two in the fourth inning with his 14th homer of the season, a solo shot to right off Irwin.
Altoona (47-61) plated its lone run against Turgeon in the fifth inning. Curry and Latimore rapped consecutive singles leading to Sanchez, who clubbed a ground-rule double to left-center to score Curry making it 5-2. Turgeon tied a season-high by hurling 3 1/3 innings of solid relief.
Rhiner Cruz followed Turgeon and gave up a two-out homer to Andrew Lambo in the sixth.
Cruz would not fare so kindly in the seventh. The Curve harassed him for five runs in the frame and hit for the cycle as a team. Josh Rodriguez capped the outburst with a three-run blast to left, which advanced the lead to 11-2.
Binghamton picked up its final run in the eighth against Bryan Morris. Juan Lagares led off with a bloop single to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Dykstra took care of the rest with an opposite-field double to left to plate Lagares.
Irwin was credited with his fifth win for the Curve. He allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings.
Five B-Mets players managed multiple hits and Jordany Valdespin extended his season-long hitting streak to 10 games with a ninth-inning single.
Binghamton looks to even the series Wednesday at 7 PM in the middle game of the three-game set. RHP Tobi Stoner (4-5, 5.37) will start opposite LHP Jeff Locke (6-8, 4.41). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
