Fisher Cats Hold off Late Rally and Top Squirrels 7-6

(Richmond, VA)-Adeiny Hechavarria drilled a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to rally the Fisher Cats into the lead and New Hampshire went on to a 7-6 win in the opener of a three-game series at The Diamond on Tuesday night.

Deck McGuire (2-0), pitching in his hometown, worked the first six innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five.

Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Charlie Culberson's eighth home run of the season was a solo shot off Deck McGuire.

The Fisher Cats (60-49) answered in the top of the second inning as Travis d'Arnaud went the opposite way to right field for his 15th home run to tie the game at 1-1.

The Flying Squirrels (60-49) moved back in front in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roger Kieschnick led off with a home run and Chris Dominguez followed with a double. He came around to score on consecutive groundouts to give Richmond the lead at 3-1.

New Hampshire put together two doubles in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. d'Arnaud doubled and scored on a two-base hit by Mark Sobolewski.

In the top of the seventh inning, against reliever and losing pitcher Mitch Lively (0-1), Yan Gomes singled and Jonathan Diaz reached on an error. Hechavarria doubled to put the Fisher Cats in front 4-3, and scored on an another error on a grounder by d'Arnaud.

Gomes and Diaz hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the eighth inning as New Hampshire moved up 7-3.

In the last of the ninth inning, Richmond rallied with three runs before Clint Everts came on to put end the threat. After striking out Juan Perez with the tying run at second, Everts got Sharlon Schoop to line to Hechavarria, which turned into a game-ending double play.

The Fisher Cats continue the roadtrip in Richmond on Wednesday night at 7:05pm. RHP Joel Carreno (7-8, 3.45) will start for New Hampshire against LHP Chuck Lofgren (2-0, 0.73) for the Flying Squirrels. Radio coverage with Bob Lipman begins at 6:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
