Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums left 10 runners on base as the Washington Wild Things beat the Bums at Wuerfel Park for the first time since June 25, 2009 in front of 3,851 fans by a score of 4-2.
The Wild Things struck for three runs in the first two innings to stake themselves to a 3-0 lead. Washington center fielder Chris Sidick delivered one of the best performances by a Wild Things hitter this season, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and three runs scored. An RBI-single by first baseman Doug Thennis helped stake the Wild Things to their three run edge.
The Beach Bums brought the score within a run on an RBI-single by left fielder J.T. Hall, and a bases loaded walk by first baseman Chase Burch made the score 3-2 in the fifth inning. In the seventh, the Wild Things brought home a very important insurance run on a bloop RBI-single by second baseman Scott Lawson to extend the Wild Things lead to 4-2.
Traverse City threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, putting their first two runners on base on walks in each frame. The Beach Bums were unable to bring the baserunners to the plate, as they left all four runners in base in those innings before being retired 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the ballgame.
Washington starter Justin Edwards (2-2) pitched five innings to pick up his second win in 2011, while Beach Bums starting pitcher Rick Raraigh (0-1) allowed three runs in his professional debut in suffering his first professional loss. The Beach Bums fall to 28-25 with the loss, while the Wild Things improve to 22-29 on the season.
The Beach Bums-Wild Things series concludes on What's Up Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., sponsored by Charter Communications. Left hander David Deminsky makes the start for the Beach Bums on the mound, while Gary Lee gets the start for Washington.
