Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (29-22) @ WINDY CITY THUNDERBOLTS (27-25)
Tuesday, July 19 - 10:05 a.m. CT
Standard Bank Stadium - Crestwood, IL Game #52 - Road Game #26 (29-22, 13-12) LHP #46 BRIAN FOWLER (3-1, 1.73 ERA) vs. LHP #25 MATT COSTELLO (2-3, 5.65 ERA)
Last Time Out...
Jake Renshaw threw his second straight complete game as he held the Windy City ThunderBolts to only four hits and the Slammers won by a score of 8-1. They were down 1-0 after five but pushed across three runs in the third inning. Kyle Maunus doubled in Erik Lis and Sean Estand singled in two runs of his own to give Joliet a three to one edge. The score remained 3-1 until the eighth inning when Trey Manz smacked a RBI single to extend the Joliet lead to 4-1. Joliet really pulled away in the ninth when they plated four more runs. The inning was capped off by a Bobby Leeper two-RBI single and a Josh Flores RBI single. The day belonged to Renshaw though as he surrendered only four hits and one run, walking three and striking out five to earn his team-leading sixth win of the year. Joliet's only two complete games in franchise history have been thrown by Renshaw.
For Starters...
Brian Fowler has won two starts in a row including a very good outing last time out against Southern Illinois where he went six and a third innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits. Fowler has not given up more than two earned runs in any of his four starts for the Slammers. The 6'7'' lefty started this season in the Pecos League with the Roswell Invaders where he went 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA in six appearances, three starts. He's a graduate of Chico State University where he played two years of ball after transferring from Treasure Valley Community College. Fowler hails from Missoula, Montana.
Making the most of their chances...
The Slammers are hitting .256 as a team, but have scored the same number of runs (243) as Windy City. The ThunderBolts are second in the league in batting average at .269.
A red hot regular...
Erik Lis is the only Slammer who has played in every game this season. In the month of July he is hitting .426.
Hit men...
The 16 hits the Slammers tallied last night matched their previous high water mark, set on June 23, also against the ThunderBolts.
#Winning...
The Slammers have matched their season-high of seven games over .500.
Road Warriors as of late...
The Slammers are in the midst of their longest road winning streak of the year as they've won their last five games away from Silver Cross Field. Joliet's recent hot streak has allowed them to have a winning record of 13-12 away from home.
Walking to first and crossing the plate...
Kyle Maunus is only hitting .219 this season but he leads the team in walks with 25. Maunus has scored at least one run in seven consecutive games for the Slammers and leads the team with 34 runs scored.
Feeling some aggression...
This series matches the two offenses with the fewest walks on the 2011 Frontier League season. Windy City has drawn 172 walks while the Slammers have only drawn 175 themselves.
MVP!
Erik Lis started at first base for the East Division in the Frontier League All-Star Game on Wednesday and took home the MVP award as the East won 4-2. Lis hit a two-RBI triple in the first inning and would come around to score. He added a single later in the game as he went 2-3. Lis currently leads the Slammers in batting avg. (.318), HR (10), and RBI (43).
Transaction Wire...
Brian Fowler was activated from the Disabled List today.
