
Bums Fall to Rascals in Weekend Opener

O'FALLON, MO - The Traverse City Beach Bums'(24-34) gave up a couple of long balls on their way to a 5-3 loss to the River City Rascals(27-29).
In the bottom of the second inning, Kyle Gaedele led off with a double then two batters later, Clint Freeman slammed a two-run homer over the short wall in right. It was his fifth of the season and the Rascals led 2-0. The Bums responded in the top of the third when Giancarlo Brugnoni hit an opposite field solo homer, his fifth of the year, the cut the deficit in half.
In the bottom of the inning, River City added on to their lead with a two-run single by Gaedele, scoring Braxton Martinez and Alexi Colon who singled and walked, respectively, to start the inning. The Rascals made it 5-1 in the fourth when Colon hit his eleventh homer of the season, a solo shot over the big wall in right.
Ryan Bottger led off the top of the sixth for the Bums with a single to center. Jose Vargas then hit his second single of the game to put two men on base with nobody out. Will Kengor came up next and laced an RBI single up the middle to score Bottger. After a pitching change, and Elijah Trail reached on a fielder's choice, Steven Patterson hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Vargas, and the Bums were within two, but that is as close as they would come.
River City starter, Josh Wright pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, and struck out five. He gets the win to improve to 3-1. Michael Shreves gets the loss to drop to 2-4, after throwing three innings and allowing four runs on five hits and three walks. Zac Treece faced the minimum in the ninth to earn his eleventh save.
Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums once again will face the River City Rascals, in the second game of a three game series. Austin Bembnowski gets the call for the Bums while Zeb Sneed starts for Gateway. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35pm and Tom Willms will have the Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 7:15pm, on 101.9- The Bay.

The Beach Bums Box Office & Gift Shop are now open with non-gameday hours of 10am to 6pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturday. Wuerfel Park is closed on non-gameday Sundays.
