Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners shut out the Washington Wild Things on Friday night in front of a season-best crowd of 4,933 at Rent One Park by a final score of 8-0, winning their sixth game in a row and their 40th of the season, improving to 40-17 in the weekend series opener.

Southern Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back leadoff doubles by Aaron Gates and Shane Kennedy, then a 2-0 lead later in the frame when Alex De Leon hit a sacrifice fly. The score would remain 2-0 Miners until the bottom of the fifth inning, when after a mid-inning power outage in the area delayed the game by 20 minutes, the Miners powered up offensively.

In the inning, Kennedy and Craig Massey each worked one-out walks and each stole second base in the frame. With runners at second and third, De Leon worked a 10-pitch at-bat before shooting a double the other way to right-center to score both runners and give the Miners a 4-0 lead. Nolan Earley followed with an RBI single of his own for a 5-0 Miners advantage.

The Miners weren't done offensively. Kurt Wertz, Jr. led off the sixth with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Francisco Rosario to make it 6-0. The Miners then took advantage of four walks in the eighth by Ashton Perritt, using a wild pitch and a ground-rule double by Kennedy to plate two more runs for the 8-0 final margin.

On the mound, Jarett Miller (5-2) earned his fifth win of the season with six and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball, walking five but surrendering only four hits, all singles. Three relievers would complete the shutout, the Miners' sixth such victory of the season, as Southern Illinois remained unbeaten since the all-star break.

Kennedy finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks, two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases on the game, while De Leon doubled in a 1-for-3 game with three RBIs. Earley and Wertz, Jr. also had two hits apiece for the Miners, who will look to win a seventh consecutive game and take the series on Saturday night at Rent One Park. Brooks Trujillo gets the start for the Miners against Washington's Sam Agnew-Wieland at 6:05 p.m.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
