Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
RAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped their second consecutive one-run decision to the Chillicothe Paints, falling 4-3 at Wuerfel Park on Wednesday night.
Ryan Gehring started for Traverse City and retired the first 10 hitters of the game. Chillicothe broke through with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to open a 3-0 edge. Only one of the runs was driven in. Travis Garcia started the inning with a double and moved to third on a grounder to Brad Miller. Miller attempted to throw out Garcia at third but everyone was safe. The first run scored on a delayed steal as Garcia snuck around the tag of Patrick Perry while caught in a rundown between third and home. The second run scored on a wild pitch, and Zach Rodeghero capped the scoring with an RBI single.
The Beach Bums plated their first run in the sixth inning to pull within 3-1. Patrick Perry drew a leadoff walk and scored from second on a two-out ground-rule double off the bat of Brad Miller. The Paints answered in seventh when Bubba Garcia drove in a run with a single to extend the advantage to 4-1. Gehring pitched 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, suffering his seventh setback of the season.
Traverse City made things interesting in the eighth inning, scoring two runs and stranding the tying run at third. Eric Newton and Zack Kalter singled to begin the frame. Newton scored when Mike Epping doubled to right on a 2-1 pitch from Chillicothe reliever Joe Brown. A balk forced home Kalter to pull the Beach Bums within 4-3, but closer Edwin Walker entered and following a walk escaped the inning. Patrick Perry singled with one out in the ninth, but pinch runner Damon Lessler was stranded at first as the tying run.
The Beach Bums finished with 10 hits in the game but left 12 men on the base paths. Steve Young, Zack Kalter, Brad Miller, and Mike Epping all had multi-hit performances at the plate. Mike Takashima was the Beach Bums Player of the Game, striking out four in his 1.2 perfect innings of relief.
