LOVES PARK, Ill. - Tim Dorn hit his third home run in two nights as Southern Illinois beat Rockford, 11-6, on Wednesday at Road Ranger Stadium.
Dorn broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning with his 21st home run of the season and fourth in 11 games against Rockford.
The RiverHawks fell seven games behind the Frontier League West-leading Miners after losses in the first two games of the series. Rockford remains two games behind Gateway for the final playoff spot. Gateway lost, 5-3, at Evansville.
In the third inning, Frontier League wins and strikeouts leader Ryan Bird made his first relief appearance of the season. His scheduled Wednesday start had been scratched because of scheduled rain which never arrived. Bird entered with two on, two outs and a two-run lead. He promptly gave up a RBI double to Brad Dutton and a two-run single to Robbie Knapp as Rockford took a 4-3 lead.
Bird retired the next 12 in order and struck out the side in the fourth inning. Bird (12-3) struck out nine over 5 1/3 innings to earn the victory. His strikeout total is 125, 41 short of the league record set six years ago by Rockford's Jason Shelley.
Rockford reliever Tim Flattery (2-3) gave up three runs in the fourth inning and took the loss. Joey Metropoulos doubled in the tying run and Dorn hit a two-run homer to right-center field.
Jason James hit his career-best 10th home run for Rockford, a leadoff shot to right-center, in the eighth inning.
The series finale is at 7:05 p.m. on Thirsty Thursday. It's Miller Lite/104.9 - the X Dollar Beer Night. It's also Army/Marines Military Appreciation Night, when the RiverHawks play in camo caps and jerseys.
