Bums drop second half opener

TRAVERSE CITY, MI ¡V The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped the opening game of the second half on Friday night, falling to the Midwest Sliders by a 4-1 score.

Traverse City couldn¡¦t solve Midwest starter Kyle Kearcher, who threw seven shutout innings and struck out eight to notch his fifth win of the season while scattering four hits and walking one. Kearcher outmatched Beach Bums¡¦ starter David Nathanson, the Frontier League leader in wins.

Nathanson matched his career high by pitching eight innings to earn Beach Bums Player of the Game. He walked two and struck out five in taking just his second loss of the season. Midwest opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning as Eric Reese reached on an infield single and scored when Bryan Vickers connected on his seventh homer of the season.

The Beach Bums notched their lone run in the bottom of the eighth against the Midwest bullpen. Steve Young recorded a one out single up the middle and Jake Whitesides and Kyle Maunus each walked. Mike Epping greeted Midwest closer Earl Oakes with a bloop single into center to score Young and cut the lead to 2-1. Oakes retired the next two hitters to leave the bases loaded. Traverse City left 11 men on base including two more against Oakes in the ninth, who picked up his eighth save.

Midwest added to the lead in the top of the ninth as Bryan Vickers drove in a run and another scored on an error. The Beach Bums totaled six hits in the contest from six different individuals.

The Beach Bums (30-22) will continue the series with Midwest and the 12-game homestand tomorrow night with a 7:05pm contest against the Sliders. LHP Ryan Gehring (4-3, 2.73) starts for the Beach Bums opposite RHP Ryan MacFarlane (1-2, 2.79).
