Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(16-28) worked two big innings early on and didn't look back on their way to an 8-4 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners(30-13).
Southern Illinois got the scoring started in the first, taking a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Alex DeLeon and Steve Marino. The Beach Bums responded in the bottom of the inning, bringing eight men to the plate. Marcos Derkes led off with a double to left field and moved to third on a ground-out. Steven Patterson then hit a fly ball to left but it snuck under the glove of the fielder for an error. Derkes scored on the play and Patterson ended up on second. Will Kengor tied the game with an RBI single to score Patterson. After Giancarlo Brugnoni was plunked by a pitch, Elijah Trail launched a three-run homer over the left field wall. It was his first as a Bum and fourth of season, and Traverse City led 5-2.
Southern Illinois got one run back in the second when Shane Kennedy grounded out. Francisco Rosario came in to score after walking earlier in the inning. The Beach Bums has another productive inning in the third, scoring three more runs. Patterson led off with his sixth long ball of the season, clearing the right field fence. Brugnoni, two batters later, reached on a fielding error then moved to third on a double by Trail. After Christian Santisteban walked, the bases were loaded. Kendall Patrick slipped an RBI single to left, followed by a Jeff Deblieux RBI sacrifice fly to extend the lead to five.
From there, the pitching settled down although the Bums staff walked ten men in the game and wiggled out of trouble just about every time. In the top of the ninth, DeLeon walked then scored on a fielder error during Nolan Earley's double. The Miners had the tying run on deck but that is as close as they would come.
James Ball came in during the fifth inning and pitched two solid frames in relief to earn his first professional win, improving his record to 1-3. Rick Teasley struggled in the start but calmed down as after giving up eight runs, five earned, nine hits, and three walks. He falls to 4-2 with tonight's loss. Andrew Brockett was called on to get the final out and he earned his fourth save of the season.
Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums and Southern Illinois collide in the rubber match of this three game series. Kramer Champlin gets the call for the Beach Bums while Dan Ludwig goes for Southern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and Tom Willms will have a special Miller Lite Pre-Game Show at 6:15pm, including the pre-game Welcome Home Fourth of July ceremonies on 101.9- The Bay.
