Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored twice in the first inning in their bid to win an eleventh straight game on Saturday at Wuerfel Park against the Traverse City Beach Bums, but the home team plated five runs in the first inning and then three more runs in the third to top the Miners 8-4 and even the series, ending their ten-game win streak.

In the first, with two outs and Aaron Gates at third base, Alex De Leon opened the scoring with an RBI single for a 1-0 Miners lead. After Nolan Earley followed with a single, Steve Marino smacked a third-straight Miners single to score a second run and give the team a 2-0 lead. But Traverse City would plate five runs in the bottom half of the inning against Rick Teasley on an error in left field by Craig Massey, an RBI single by Will Kengor and a three-run, go-ahead homer by Elijah Trail to take a 5-2 advantage.

Southern Illinois was able to get a run back in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Shane Kennedy, making the score 5-3 Traverse City, but the Beach Bums would plate the remainder of their runs in the third inning, with Steven Patterson leading off the frame against Teasley (4-2) with a solo home run and RBIs later in the inning by Kendall Patrick and Jeff DeBlieux.

Teasley would settle down from there, retiring seven batters in the row and pitching six and one-third innings, but the Miners' offense could not muster a comeback in the middle innings. They had runners on base in each inning from the fifth onward, but did not score until the ninth, when a double by Earley and an error in the outfield scored De Leon from first base for the final margin of 8-4.

The Miners will look to rebound in the rubber match of the three-game series on Sunday night beginning at 6:05 p.m., with Dan Ludwig taking the hill against Traverse City's Kramer Champlin.
