Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - A solo home run from Michel Hernandez in the sixth inning put the Bulls ahead for good as they split the series with a wild, 5-4 win over the Buffalo Bisons on Sunday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Buffalo had erased the Bulls' three run lead in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run home run from Jonathan Van Every and an RBI-single from Ryan Mulhern to tie the game at four, but Hernandez's homer to lead off the bottom half of the inning put the Bulls ahead 5-4. The Bulls had taken the lead early with Jeremy Owens earning a bases loaded walk and Jorge Velandia hitting a sacrifice fly for two runs in the first inning. Van Every hit his first home run of the day in the third inning to bring the Bisons within one, but the Bulls added two more runs with an RBI-single from Elliot Johnson and a sacrifice fly from Ben Zobrist to take a 4-1 lead.

All nine runs in the game were charged to the starting pitchers. LHP Jeremy Sowers (0-4) surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two in six innings for Buffalo, while RHP Jae Kuk Ryu allowed four runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts for Durham. Jeff Ridgway (1-2) earned the win after entering in the sixth inning and throwing 1 2/3 innings, and Scott Dohmann earned his fifth save of the season after retiring the side in the ninth inning.

Tensions ran high in the seventh inning, as Yamid Haad was ejected in the top half for arguing a called-strike three call and the benches cleared after Ridgway hit Van Every with a pitch.

The Bulls will hit the road to start a four-game series at Louisville on Monday night, with coverage on 620 The Bull starting at 6:30 PM. The Bulls will travel to Indianapolis after the Louisville series for a another four game series before returning to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park to face Norfolk on Tuesday, July 24 at 7 PM.
