Gwinnett Stripers News Release
DANVILLE, VA - With none out in the eighth, the Greeneville Astros reached the Danville Braves staff for their first hit of the night as they lost in a two-hitter by the score of 11-2.
Jose Ortegano (2-0) went six innings without giving up a hit and Raul Gonzalez followed with one more hitless frame before the Greeneville Astros broke through for a double and a single in the eighth.
Ortegano allowed a leadoff walk in the first inning, but picked him off and did not look back, allowing only two other baserunners in the game. Those baserunners came on errors, making Ortegano's final line six innings with one walk, four strikeouts and no hits. He came into the game with the fifth-best ERA in the Appalachian League at 1.45 and he lowered it to 1.09 tonight.
The defense was solid behind Ortegano, though it did not have to steal any definite hits away. The most spectacular play was a sliding catch by Adam Parliament in right-field foul territory during the sixth.
Gonzalez came in for his first Danville appearance in the seventh and got outstanding defense in his first out. Ebert Rosario hit a shot of Gonzalez's glove and Cole Miles recovered the ricochet. He got Rosario in a close play at first to keep the no-hitter alive.
Gonzalez got through the seventh and walked the first batter in the eighth. Reinaldo Pestana then hit a clean double to left to end the no-hit bid. A one-out hit batter loaded the bases and another walk forced the first Astro run across. The next batter singled to left to plate another. A flyout and a K ended the frame and Casey Beck also saw his first Danville action in the ninth. He recorded a 1-2-3 inning.
Gonzalez allowed two earned runs off two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Beck's ninth saw two Ks.
The Braves, meanwhile, pounded Greeneville for 11 runs off 15 hits. The scoring mostly came in a seven-run fourth. The top of the lineup set the table well, as Miles went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs in the leadoff spot and Michael Fisher went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs in the two hole.
Danville started the scoring right away in the first. Miles drew a walk and moved to third on a two-out Cody Johnson single through the hole at second. Brandon Hicks hit a blooper to left center to score the opening run.
The next Danville scoring came in the fourth. Adam Coe led off and hit a gapper to right for two bases. A wild pitch and a full-count walk followed to put runners on the corners. Bubba Garcia stepped up and served the first pitch he saw to left as Coe came in. After a flyout, Miles split the gap in right center and flew around the bases for a two-run triple. Fisher notched a base hit to left as Miles came in. Ernesto Mejia then pounded a double to left as Fisher moved to third. Johnson then hit the second triple of the inning as two more scored.
At that point, Mason Roberts replaced starter Agustin Pinales on the mound and got a groundout that moved Johnson in from third. The Braves batted around as Coe flew out for the last out of the fourth. Danville had six hits in the inning.
The final three runs came in the sixth. Miles led off and singled. He advanced to second on a balk and Fisher grounded through the hole on the right side as Miles came to third. A Mejia sac fly scored Miles. Johnson then walked before a pitching change.
With Guillermo Urbina in and Roberts out, Hicks collected a base knock to fill the bases. Coe walked with the bags full before a Parliament groundout brought the final run in. The inning ended with another groundout.
Pinales took the loss with 3.1 innings and eight earned runs. He allowed 10 hits and two walks while fanning four.
The Greeneville defeat allows Danville to move to a 14-8 record. Burlington also won, so the Braves still remain a half game out of first place.
There are plenty of upcoming promotions. On July 15, kids can run the bases after the game. The last game of the homestand is the first Faith Night of the year. It features Sons of Levi.
