Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - After rain delayed the start of action until just after 8:35 p.m., the Bulls downed Columbus 7-0 on Tuesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham got on the board with four runs in the sixth inning, breaking a scoreless tie and giving Richard De Los Santos his eighth victory of the season.

De Los Santos kept the Columbus offense in check to earn his seventh quality start out of 15 on the season. The right-hander allowed three hits and did not walking a batter while striking out four in 6.0 innings of work.

Clippers starter Carlos Carrasco left with an injury after just 3.1 innings of work, forcing Columbus skipper Mike Sarbaugh to go to his bullpen in the fourth inning. Josh Judy came on to work 1.2 scoreless innings for Columbus, as the two teams combined for just six hits through the first five innings of action.

The Bulls offense finally broke through in the sixth inning off left-hander Jeremy Sowers. Two straight doubles by Elliot Johnson and Justin Ruggiano plated a run with one-out. Dan Johnson singled to put men at first and third, and Chris Richard singled up the middle into center field to score Ruggiano. Jose Lobaton made it five straight hits with an RBI single to left, before J.J. Furmaniak brought home the fourth run on a squeeze bunt.

They would add three more in the eighth against Sowers, as the Bulls loaded the bases with nobody out to start the inning. After a force out got the first out of the inning, an RBI groundout by Angel Chavez pushed one run across. Alvin Colina followed with a two-run single, capping off the Bulls scoring and making it a 7-0 lead.

After De Los Santos came out, R.J. Swindle entered to work 2.0 scoreless innings. Winston Abreu worked the ninth, striking out all three batters he faced to end the game and snap a skid in which the Bulls had lost five of their last six.

Abreu has not allowed an earned run since May 18 against Toledo, a streak which now spans 20 appearances. He has also struck out 37 over his last 22.1 innings of work during the current streak, and has gone a perfect 10-for-10 in save opportunities.

The two teams continue the series tomorrow as RHP Virgil Vasquez (4-1 4.26) takes the mound against Clippers RHP Justin Germano (2-2 2.95). Game time is set for 7.05 p.m.
