Norfolk, VA - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Norfolk Tides by the score of 8-5 on Tuesday night. Erik Arnesen pitched six shutout innings and Leonard Davis added a two-run home run in the winning effort.
Syracuse (54-43) started scoring early with two runs in the first inning. Three straight walks to Boomer Whiting, Seth Bynum, and Chase Lambin loaded the bases for Jason Botts. He grounded the ball to the first baseman Nolan Reimold who mishandled the ball and Whiting scored from third. Luis Ordaz singled in the second run of the game later in the inning to make it 2-0 Syracuse after 1.
In the second, Bynum hit a sac fly to push the lead to 3-0, and Botts grounded out to make it 4-0. For Botts, it was his second RBI of the game. With Lambin on base after a walk, Leonard Davis hit a home run to right to give the Chiefs a 6-0 lead. In the fifth, Carlos Maldonado added an RBI single to give Syracuse a 7-0 advantage.
Norfolk (45-53) scored for the first time in the seventh inning facing Ron Villone. He came on in relief of Erik Arnesen who threw six scoreless innings giving up just one hit and striking out three. He picked up the victory in his first start since July 4th against Buffalo.
Villone allowed a leadoff single to Matt Angle, and then an RBI double to Robert Andino which made the score 7-1. Just three batters later, Michael Aubrey took Villone deep with a three-run home run to make it 7-4 after seven innings.
In the eighth, Chase Lambin tripled home Boomer Whiting as he scored his third run of the game and Lambin collected his third triple of the season. Syracuse led 8-4 heading to the ninth. In the final frame, the Tides scored one final run on an Aubrey sacrifice fly to make the final score 8-5.
Erik Arnesen improved to 3-5 with the win and Tim Bascom dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
On Wednesday night, the Chiefs and Tides will play the third of their four game series. RHP Jason Jones (1-4, 4.82) is scheduled to start for Syracuse and Troy Patton (6-9, 4.91) is slated to pitch for Norfolk. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
