Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Kinston, NC - Winston-Salem's bullpen tossed four scoreless innings to help the Dash slip past Kinston 4-3 on Saturday night at Grainger Stadium. Three relievers combined to work four shutout innings while holding the Indians to three hits with seven strikeouts as the Dash snapped their four-game losing streak and even this three-game series at a game apiece.
With the game tied at three after seven innings, Winston-Salem (4-6) manufactured the winning run in the eighth inning against Kinston reliever Chen-Chang Lee. Jordan Danks led off the frame with a double and moved to third on a Greg Paiml sacrifice bunt. Jimmy Gallagher, who extended his hitting streak to a team-high nine games, followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Dash in front 4-3.
Winston-Salem reliever Hector Santiago worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning and recorded two outs in the ninth inning before giving way to Santo Luis. With a runner on first base, Matt McBride hit a towering fly ball to deep left field that fell helplessly into the glove off Dash left fielder Kyle Shelton for the final out.
Kinston (4-6) grabbed an early lead when McBride hit a solo home run off Dash starting pitcher Johnnie Lowe to lead off the bottom of the second inning. It was just the second home run for Kinston this year and first since Tim Fedroff led off the season with a solo home run off Dash hurler Matt Long.
The Dash offense came to life in the third inning against Indians starter Ryan Morris. Shelton singled, Dale Mollenhaur reached on an error and Jordan Danks walked to load the bases with one out. Next, Greg Paiml cleared the bases with a double to give Winston-Salem a 3-1 lead. The lead did not last long as McBride smacked another home run, a two-run blast in the bottom of the third inning to knot the score at three.
Henry Mabee (1-0) tossed two shutout innings of relief and limited Kinston to two hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. Lee (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing a run on a hit in two innings of work. Luis collected his first save of the season for recording the final out.
Winston-Salem and Kinston will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Grainger Stadium. The Dash will turn to RHP Matt Long (0-1, 5.06) while the Indians are expected to start LHP Ryan Miller (0-0, --), who was recently called up for Low-A Lake County. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
