Hill City Howlers News Release
LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (7-2) @ WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (5-4)
April 18th, 2009 -- 6:05 PM
Judy Johnson Field @ Daniel S. Frawley Stadium
LHP Paul Mildren (0-1, 5.79) vs. LHP Everett Teaford (0-0, 2.08)
THE HILLCATS: The Hillcats won their first road game of the season last night with a 4-3 win over the Blue Rocks in Wilmington...The series opening victory gave Lynchburg four straight wins and they have now won five of their last six games...Tonight is game two of a brief three-game road trip...11 of the first 14 games of the year for Lynchburg are at Calvin Falwell Field...
VS. WILMINGTON: Last season the Blue Rocks won the series 11-9...The first trip to Frawley Stadium last season was not a fun won for the Hillcats...Wilmington swept the three-game series and outscored Lynchburg 26-3...That was part of an 18-game stretch in May last year in which the Cats went 3-15...
CLAWING CATS: Of the seven wins Lynchburg has this season, five of them have been of the come from behind variety...Last night was their third straight comeback win and the second straight game they erased a two-run deficit with a four-run inning...In 2008 Lynchburg had 22 comeback wins in 138 games...
IRON MAN: In the last three days RHP R.J. Rodriguez has pitched three times and has picked up two saves and a win...On Tuesday night he pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve 5-4 win over Winston-Salem...Wednesday he pitched a perfect ninth to set-up the dramatic three-run walk-off home run by Alvarez and the Cats...And last night he worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to notch his third save in as many chances...He is the first Hillcat to pitch in back-to-back-to-back games this season...
CLUBBING CATCHER: C Kris Watts is off to an incredible start this season...In eight games this year he is batting .417 (10-for-24) with five doubles, a triple, a home run, five RBI, seven runs scored and six walks...He has an on-base percentage of .533 and a slugging percentage of .833, which combine to give him a 1.037 OPS...Last night he went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored...His two-bagger began the frame that the Hillcats scored all four of their runs in...
NUMERO UNO: The comparisons to the Hillcats Pedro Alvarez and Wilmington's Mike Moustakas are striking...Both are third baseman, both were taken with the second overall pick in the draft (Alvarez in 2008 and Moustakas in 2007) and now both are the number one prospect in their respective organizations...After Alvarez was the hero with his walk-off win on Thursday against Winston-Salem, Moustakas had a chance to do the same last night when he came to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth...The Royals prospect though, flew out to center to end the game...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Everett Teaford was selected in the 12th round selection in the 2006 draft by the Royals out of Georgia Southern University...His final year here he went 10-4 with a 3.96 ERA in 19 games (16 starts)...He made his pro debut that same year and went 5-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 15 games (12 starts) with Idaho Falls at the Rookie level...In 2007 he advanced to the Low-A level with Burlington and went 6-8 with 4.68 ERA in 27 games (21 starts)...Teaford spent all of last season with Wilmington at the High-A level and went 8-6 with a 3.80 ERA in 28 games (23 starts)...The lefty made six starts against Lynchburg last season and went 3-1 with a 2.65 ERA against the Cats...
