Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Despite striking first, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell just short of the Potomac Nationals 5-4 at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA.

The Pelicans struck first in the top of the third capitalizing on a leadoff double by Randy Gress who came home on a Micheal Fisher sacrifice fly to put Myrtle Beach up 1-0.

Pelicans starter Jose Ortegano (1-2) was solid through his first three innings but ran into problems in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Nationals hung four on the lefty. Danny Expinosa doubled to open the frame followed by a groundout and a strikeout by the next two batters. P-Nats catcher Brian Peacock worked Ortegano for a walk followed by three straight hits by Francisco Plasencia, Tim Pahuta and Dan Nelson who capped the scoring with an RBI double. Ortegano was finished after four and one-thirds innings allowing four earned runs on six hits to get handed the loss.

The Pelcians drew closer with a run in the top of the sixth inning when Donell Linares, who reached on an error, scored on a Freddie Freeman sac fly. The Nationals answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to open the lead back up to three. Cody Johnson added a two-run home run, his team-leading fifth of the year, to pull within one.

The Pelicans got a runner into scoring position against Nationals reliever Atahualpa Severino (S, 1) in the ninth, but couldn't score the tying run as Severino notched his first save of the season. Potomac starter Brad Meyers (1-0) was tough on the Birds allowing just two runs, one earned, in five and two-thirds innings to earn his first win of the season.

The series concludes tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 as lefty Edgar Osuna goes for the Pelicans opposite left hander William Atwood of Potomac.
