WOODBRIDGE, Va- On the first Fireworks Night at Pfitzner Stadium, the P-Nats' lumber supplied plenty of firepower of their own in defeating the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-4 for their initial home victory of the 2009 season.

Starting pitcher Brad Meyers was superb in his second start of the season. Meyers (1-0) threw 5 2/3 innings, only allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out four. Meyers also struck out four without walking a batter.

The Pelicans' starter, lefty Jose Ortegano (1-2), struggled on the hill giving up four runs in 4 1/3 innings.

In order for Meyers to record his first victory, he needed a little help from his friends and he received it from relievers Jamie Lehman and Atahualpa Severino. Lehman threw 1 2/3 scoreless frames with the only blemish being a bloop single from designated hitter Cole Miles. Severino's night started auspiciously as he walked the first hitter he faced. Two batters later, former first round pick Cody Johnson bashed a booming two-run home run to left center field to cut the P-Nat lead to 5-4.

The Dominican left-hander would recover, however, and notch a scoreless ninth inning, stranding the tying run at second base and earning his first save of the season.

At the plate, the P-Nats went on the offensive in a fourth inning that saw eight Nationals batters come up and four runs cross the dish. Shortstop Danny Espinosa led off the inning with a double and came around to score on Francisco Plasencia's two-run single. Some fancy sliding by Fernando on a Tim Pahuta single to right brought in the P-Nats' third run and Dan Nelson doubled home Pahuta to make the score 4-1.

An error by Pelican first baseman Freddie Freeman allowed the P-Nats to plate the fifth run of the game, and that would be all the offense needed on a night full of fireworks at the Pfitz.

The P-Nats and Pelicans play the rubber game of this three-game series tomorrow with the first pitch slated for 1:05 ET.
