
Bullpen Extends Scoreless Streak to 23 Innings as Kernels Win Sixth Straight

Beloit, WI - The Cedar Rapids bullpen extended their scoreless streak to 23.0 innings as the Kernels took game five from Beloit 3-1 on Saturday evening, winning their sixth-straight game and improving to a season-best 22 games over .500. Brent Headrick fired 5.0 innings of one-run ball to earn his eighth win as Wander Javier went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the lineup. The Kernels are now 54-32, 11-9 in the second half.
Headrick struck out three while scattering three hits and a walk over his 5.0 frames, allowing a lone run. The lefthander fired 45 strikes on 73 pitches with nine whiffs, moving Cedar Rapids to 10-1 in his last 11 starts.
The Kernels opened the scoring in the first as Seth Gray walked, Aaron Sabato singled then Yunior Severino drew a free pass to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Javier laced a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 Cedar Rapids lead.
Will Holland made it 3-0 in the second as he singled, stole second then took the next two bags on a pair of wild pitches.
After Headrick exited with the Kernels ahead 3-1 heading into the sixth, Derek Molina took over and fired 1.2 scoreless with one strikeout. Hunter McMahon took the ball with a runner on first and two down in the seventh, going on to retire each of the seven men he faced to lock down his sixth save of the season. McMahon punched out three and threw 19 strikes on 24 pitches.
Cedar Rapids' bullpen has now fired 23.0 straight scoreless innings dating back to Sunday as the Kernels have won eight of their last nine games.
The series finale is set for 1:05 p.m. CT on Sunday afternoon in Beloit.
