Captains Win Fifth Straight, 5-2 Victory over Dragons

July 16, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Lake County Captains News Release

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (46-39) achieve win number five in a row as they take down the Dayton Dragons (44-41) on Triston McKenzie Bobblehead Night at Classic Park.

Lake County's starting pitcher, Tommy Mace, was exceptional in his 5.2 innings of work. He allowed no runs on five hits on a night that he fanned six Dragon batters.

The Captains were able to jump on Dayton's starter, Thomas Farr, early. The first time through the Lake County order for the former Gamecock, five Captains reached safely with hits. However, just as quickly as Farr worked himself into trouble, he worked himself out of it. The 2021 fifth-round selection would force three double plays in the first three innings.

The first run in the ballgame wouldn't be scored until the bottom of the sixth inning. With two runners on base after back-to-back hits, Gabriel Rodriguez would lift a ball into left field, driving home Petey Halpin from third with a sacrifice fly. In the next at-bat, Aaron Bracho would step to the plate and muscle his fifth home run of the season over the right field wall to put the Captains up 3-0.

That home run would be the end of Farr's outing. He finished with three runs allowed on ten hits over 5.2 innings pitched-a strong performance from Farr that isn't reflected in the stat sheet.

Randy Labaut would be the reliever that would come in following Tommy Mace's start. He came on with two runners on base but immediately retired Tyler Callihan via a strikeout. He worked a scoreless seventh inning before working into trouble in the eighth. He would leave with runners on first and third after allowing two runs in the inning.

Davis Sharpe came into the pinch with a 3-2 lead. Following a hit by pitch, the Clemson product got a strikeout. With one out and the bases loaded, Sharpe forced a flyout to right that Alexfri Planez finished with a rocket of a throw to the plate to gun down the tying run in Ashton Creal.

Lake County would respond in the eighth with two runs of their own on balls in play from Aaron Bracho and Korey Holland to give the Captains a 5-2 lead. Lake County would win by that score after retiring Dayton in order in the ninth.

The series wraps up tomorrow, Sunday, July 17th. It's Family Fun Sunday presented by Mentor Nissan with a special twist. Christmas will be celebrated at the ballpark... in July! First pitch is at 1:00p.m., gates open at 12:00p.m.

Coverage of the game can be found on WJCU.org/Captains and the MiLB First Pitch app.
