Hurter Puts the Hurt on Wisconsin

July 16, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Starting Pitcher Brant Hurter was untouchable as pitching carried the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 3-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in front of a season-high 8,301 fans in a Saturday night sellout at LMCU Ballpark.

Hurter, a Detroit Tigers Top-30 Prospect, matched the longest start of the season by a Whitecaps pitcher while coming just one strikeout shy of matching the single-game record, tossing six shutout innings with seven strikeouts and no walks in the victory. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps held Wisconsin to an 0-for-3 mark with runners in scoring position and 0-for-7 over the last two games.

The 23-year-old lefty held Wisconsin silent as the Timber Rattlers advanced only one baserunner in scoring position through the first six innings. West Michigan struck in the first as Corey Joyce blasted a two-run home run before Bryant Packard roped an RBI double, taking a 3-0 lead. Wisconsin starter Justin Jarvis responded to a rocky first inning with six scoreless frames, retiring the last ten 'Caps hitters he faced and keeping the lead at 3-0 going into the seventh. Central Michigan product Zavier Warren added a solo home run in the eighth inning. Still, Wisconsin couldn't rally as Elvis Alvarado and Dario Gardea combined for 1.2 shutout innings to slam the door on the 3-1 victory.

Hurter (3-0) secures his third victory as a Whitecap this season as Gardea collects his first save. Jarvis (7-5) suffers his fifth loss of the year, allowing three runs through seven innings of work. The Whitecaps improve to 46-40 and 15-5 in the second half, as Wisconsin falls to 45-40 and 12-8 in the second half. The final time of the game was 1:58 - officially the shortest nine-inning contest of the 2022 season. The Whitecaps are first in the Midwest League East Division second-half standings, holding a 3.5-game lead over the Lake County Captains -- who have won five straight games.
