July 16, 2022 - Midwest League (MWL)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- A sell-out crowd of 7,536 fans filled Parkview Field on Saturday night as the Fort Wayne TinCaps and Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland A's affiliate) split a doubleheader. The 'Caps claimed the opening game, 4-3, extending their winning streak to four games. However, the 'Nuts prevailed in the finale, 4-2.
Saturday's doubleheader was necessitated after Friday night's scheduled game was rained out.
In the first game, TinCaps (9-11, 36-50) shortstop Max Ferguson hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to give Fort Wayne a 3-1 lead. Though the Lugnuts equalized in the top of the fifth, the 'Caps went back in front in the ensuing half-inning as designated hitter Adam Kerner lined an RBI single.
TinCaps starter Ryan Bergert earned his first Minor League Baseball win as a starting pitcher. The right-hander also went a career-long six innings. Edwuin Bencomo saved the game with a scoreless ninth.
Like in the first game, Lansing took a 1-0 lead in the second contest. In the home second inning, left fielder Olivier Basabe hit a game-tying double. But the 'Nuts built their lead up to 4-1 with two runs in the third and one in the fourth.
The 'Caps put the winning run on base in the seventh, and final frame, as they drew four walks, including one by right fielder Matthew Acosta that plated a run.
This was the sixth sell-out of the season at Parkview Field.
Sunday marks Fort Wayne's final home game of July.
Next Game: Sunday, July 17 vs. Lansing (1:05 p.m.)
