Green Bay Rockers News Release
Kalamazoo, MI. - The visiting Green Bay Bullfrogs (21-34, 9-10) used a seven-run eighth inning to secure a wild 8-2 comeback victory over the host Kalamazoo Growlers (35-21, 11-10) at Homer Stryker Field Friday evening. The Bullfrogs trailed 2-0 entering the top of the eighth, leaving 13 runners on base through the first seven frames. However after a frustrating start, the bats came alive in the final two innings of regulation. Green Bay snaps Kalamazoo's five-game win streak and notches their first win at Homer Stryker Field this season in the Bullfrog's final game against the Growlers in 2018.
Kalamazoo struck first in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Ivan Johnson to grab a 1-0 lead. The Growlers tallied their final run in the seventh with a RBI single from Kawambee Moss to make it 2-0.
Green Bay's eighth inning rally commenced with Keaton Smith (Junior, Univ. of Nevada) laying down a bunt single, but Andre Antone (Freshman, UC Irvine) and Blake Nelson (Junior, Michigan) both scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2.
Brian Davis (Freshman, Gordon State College) laced the go-ahead RBI single to give the Frogs a 3-2 advantage. Davis then scored all the way from first base on an error by the pitcher to make it 4-2. A three-run blast by Preston Pavlica (Junior, Grand Canyon Univ.) broke the game open and stretched the lead to 7-2. In the ninth inning, the Bullfrogs added one more insurance run on a sacrifice fly from Cooper Morrison (Sophomore, UC Davis) to extend the margin to 8-2.
All nine Bullfrogs in the batting order had at least one hit in the contest. Morrison and Esteban Cardoza-Oquendo (Freshman, Navarro College) each went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Smith finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Nelson was 2-for-5. Pavlica contributed a 1-for-4 effort with three RBIs on his home run.
Green Bay relief pitcher Adam Bunnell (Sophomore, McKendree Univ.) earned the win in his Bullfrog debut, improving to 1-0. Bunnell went three innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Bullfrogs starting pitcher Ryan Gowens (Senior, Arizona) posted a quality outing, allowing one run on two hits with six strikeouts through four innings of work. Kalamazoo reliever Luke Boyd took the loss, falling to 2-2.
The Green Bay Bullfrogs conclude their final Michigan road trip of the 2018 season, facing the Battle Creek Bombers for three games this weekend at C.O. Brown Stadium. Both teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 4:05 p.m. EST to make-up the suspended game from July 20.
