ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR - Down 3-1 to the St. John's IceCaps late in the second period, the Hamilton Bulldogs scored two unanswered goals in regulation to get the game tied, then came through in the shootout to complete the comeback as Hamilton (32-34-1-6) dropped St. John's (43-22-2-5) 4-3 at Mile One Centre on Wednesday evening. The win kept the 'Dogs postseason hopes alive in the American Hockey League's Western Conference playoff race.
Just 1:59 into the game, St. John's forward John Albert pounced on a loose puck at the left faceoff circle and fired a slap shot past Hamilton goaltender Devan Dubnyk to give the IceCaps a 1-0 lead. Forward Andrew Gordon and defenceman Jordan Hill drew assists.
On the Bulldogs' first power play opportunity of the night, Hamilton defenceman Greg Pateryn fired a slap shot past St. John's goaltender Tyler Beskorowany to tie the game, 1-1. Pateryn's 15th goal of the season, scored at 13:41 of the opening frame, was assisted by forwards Mike Blunden and Gabriel Dumont.
Less than two minutes later, IceCaps forward Kyle MacKinnon regained his team's lead, 2-1, with an assist from Hill.
St. John's forward Adam Lowry banged in a loose puck in close to the 'Dogs net to give his team a 3-1 lead at 17:39 of the second period. Forwards Jerome Samson and J.C. Lipon had assists on the play.
Just 17 seconds later, Hamilton defenceman Drew Schiestel potted his second goal of the season to draw the Bulldogs back to within one, 3-2. Dumont had the only assist.
With less than eight minutes to go in the third period, Blunden redirected a pass from Dumont past Beskorowany to tie the game, 3-3. Forward Martin St. Pierre collected a second assist on Blunden's team co-leading 18th goal of the season.
After a scoreless overtime period, Hamilton forward Sven Andrighetto and St. Pierre scored in the shootout to seal the win for Hamilton. Dubnyk stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout.
Dubnyk made 25 saves on 28 shots in the Bulldogs net in the win. Beskorowany stopped 37 of 40 shots for the IceCaps in the loss.
